Scale Applications in Kubernetes

What is Scaling?

Scaling is the process of increasing or decreasing the number of application Pods to handle workload changes.

Why Do We Need Scaling?

Suppose your e-commerce application is receives a lot of traffic during a sale day:

Instead of: 2 Pod You can scale it to: 5 Pods

Normal Days  → 2 Pods

Sale Days    → 5 Pods

Kubernetes scales the application to handle more users without downtime and This will improves:

Performance

Availability

Load distribution

Scale Up

Current Deployment - replicas: 2

Scale to 5 Pods - kubectl scale deployment nginx-deployment --replicas=5

Verify - kubectl get pods

Scale Down

Current Deployment - replicas: 5

Scale to 5 Pods - kubectl scale deployment nginx-deployment --replicas=2

Verify - kubectl get pods
